Bharat has lost a Ratna: PM Modi writes on APJ Abdul Kalam's death

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a glowing tribute to former president APJ Abdul Kalam in an article shared with Hindustan Times on Tuesday calling him his 'marg darshak'(guide) who epitomised the values of self-restraint,  sacrifice and compassion.

Modi said the scientist-President never measured success by material possessions. "As a hero of our defence programme, he shifted horizons; and as a seer of the spirit, he sought to liberate doctrine from the narrow confines of partisan tension to the transcendental space of harmony,"he said.

BHARAT has lost a Ratna, but the light from this jewel will guide us towards APJ Abdul Kalam's dream-destination: India as a knowledge superpower, in the first rank of nations. Our scientist-President -and one who was genuinely loved and admired across the masses - never measured success by material possessions. For him, the counterpoint to poverty was the wealth of knowledge, in both its scientific and spiritual manifestations. As a hero of our defence programme, he shifted horizons; and as a seer of the spirit, he sought to liberate doctrine from the narrow confines of partisan tension to the transcendental space of harmony.
Every great life is a prism, and we bathe in those rays that find their way to us. His profound idealism was secure because it rested on a foundation of realism. Every child of deprivation is a realist. Poverty does not encourage illusions.  Poverty is a terrible inheritance; a child can be defeated even before he or she has begun to dream. But Kalamji refused to be defeated by circumstances. As a boy, he had to support his studies by earning money as a newspaper vendor; today, page after page of the same newspapers are filled with his obituary notices. He said that he would not be presumptuous enough to say that his life could be a role model for anybody; but if some poor child living in an obscure and underprivileged social setting found some solace in the way his destiny had been shaped, it could perhaps help such children liberate themselves from the bondage of illusory backwardness and helplessness. He is my marg darshak, as well as that of every such child.
His character, commitment and inspirational vision shine through his life. He was unencumbered by ego; flattery left him cold. He was equally at ease before an audience of suave, globe-trotting ministers and a class of young students. The first thing that struck one about him was that, uniquely, he combined the honesty of a child with the energy of a teenager and the maturity of an adult. He took little from the world, and gave all he could to society. A man of deep faith, he epitomised the three great virtues of our civilization: dama, self-restraint; dana, sacrifice; and daya, compassion.
But this persona was powered by the fire of endeavour. His vision for the nation was anchored in freedom, development and strength. Given our history, freedom had a political context of course; but it also included freedom of the mind and expansion of intellectual space. He wanted India to leap out of the under-developed trough, and eliminate the curse of poverty through inclusive economic growth. Wisely, he suggested that politicians spend only 30% of their time on politics, and 70% on development; a suggestion which he often followed up by calling in MPs from a state and discussing the socio-economic issues of their region with them. The third pillar, strength, was not born of aggression, but of understanding. An insecure nation will rarely discover the route to prosperity.  Strength commands respect. His contributions in our nuclear and space achievements have given India the muscle to be confident of her place in the region and the world.

His memory is best honoured by the creation of new institutions that nurture science and technology, and enable us to find a beneficial equation with the awesome power of nature. Too often, greed makes us predators of our environment. Kalamji saw poetry in a tree, and energy that could be harnessed in water, wind and sun. We should learn to look at our world through his eyes, and with the same missionary zeal.
Human beings can shape their lives through will, persistence, ability and sheer courage. But we have not been given the right to script where we are born, or how and when we die. However, if Kalamji had been offered an option, this is how he would perhaps have chosen to say goodbye: on his feet, and in front of a classroom of his beloved students. As a bachelor, he was childless. But that is wrong. He was a father to every Indian child, teaching, cajoling, urging, exciting, clearing darkness wherever he found it with the radiance of his vision and the passion of his involvement. He saw the future, and showed the way. As I entered the room where his body lay in state, I noticed the painting at the entrance that depicted a few lines from an inspirational book he wrote for children, Ignited Minds. The good that he did will not be interred with his bones, because his children will preserve his memory through their lives and work, and gift it to their children.

iPhone 6S Front and Back Leaked

The iPhone 6S has shown up with its back side a while ago and now we also get to see its front. There is not much left of what we do not know about the new iPhone.

The new iPhone 6S is expected to be revealed in two months. Nothing will change on the outside compared to the iPhone 6.
Earlier this month the backside of the iPhone 6 leaked and yesterday the front panel said hello directly from the assembly line. The leaked images confirm the inevitable.

Apple keeps the design of the iPhone 6 and only upgrades the inside.

Besides the iPhone 6S look, several components have leaked already.

The iPhone 6S is that it will have a redesigned wireless system featuring a new Qualcomm MDM9635M LTE chip doubling LTE download speeds to 300Mps.

Apple is also adopting the stronger 7000 series aluminum to avoid bendgate in the iPhone 6S.

It is also expected that the iPhone 6S has a force touch display like the Apple Watch. There is though still no hard evidence for this.

Some analyst say that Apple is ready to drop the 16GB entry storage option and start with 32GB in the iPhone 6S. The leaked iPhone 6S logic-board says though otherwise.

Apple is expected to offer a new color option with rose gold to match the Apple Watch options.

The iPhone 6S is expected to have a better rear camera with 12MP and 4K video support and a 5MP front camera for better selfies. The camera components have not leaked yet.

Apple is preparing the largest iPhone launch in history. An earlier report says that Apple is ordering 90 million units for 2015.

Apple filed a 10-Q filing this week that shows a $26.5 billion in off-balance sheet commitments according to Apple Insider. This is a 26% year over year increase.

The iPhone continues to gain market share as consumers switch from Android. Apple said in the Q3 earnings call earlier this week that the company is seeing the highest switcher rate from Android ever.

Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus at a media event some when in September. The iPhone 6 event was on September 9 and the release was 10 days after on September 19.

Anatomy of a hockey disaster: Paul Van Ass saga proves Batra is just as bad as Gill

What does it take for a sport to make it big in India?
Some might say money. Others might hint at talent. Still more would veer towards success at the international stage. But none of them really matter -- not in India anyway; not when you have administrators who feel they know the sport better than the coaches; not when you have administrators calmly walk onto the turf and give the players a pep talk; not when administrators sack coaches 380 days ahead of the Olympics; not when administrators sack coaches days after winning an Asiad gold; not when you have a KPS Gill; not when you have a Narinder Batra.
Money might help an individual rise through the ranks but can it do the same to a sport? Then again, one individual might have great talent but how does one raise a generation of talented players — and unless both the earlier conditions are fulfilled — getting success at international level as a nation will remain an empty pipe dream for India.
The Indian men's hockey team was the first to qualify for the Rio Olympics -- this is not to suggest that they are better than Australia, The Netherlands or even Germany -- but only to make the point that they have managed to get the most difficult part of the journey out of the way. They have qualified and they could/should begin preparing in earnest -- set everything else aside, put on the blinkers and focus on the Olympics... and the Olympics alone.
But that would have meant that Batra would have had to remain out of the limelight; he would have had to take a back seat to hockey and that just didn't sit right with the man in charge. If it's hockey in India -- the administrator always needs to be at the forefront; he is the face and he is their tragedy. The KPS Gill years were no better -- if Batra feels better it is only because Gill's madness was at another level.
Gill’s 14-year term as chief of the now defunct Indian Hockey Federation divided the federation (IHF and HI), the hockey fraternity and players, and over time, significantly dented the team’s performance and morale.
At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, the Indian team was captained by Pargat Singh. Coach Cedric D’Souza didn’t want him in the team but Gill forced his hand. India finished eighth and Pargat's full back position was the weakest slot. Gill, rather defiantly, blamed the umpiring.
He dropped/sacked star forward Dhanraj Pillay when he criticised them (demanded more pay) after the Asian Games in 1998 (where India won gold). The reasoning given was that Pillay couldn't work with his team-mates. But he wasn't the only one sacked -- the coach MK Kaushik and several other senior players were given marching orders too.
At the 2002 World Cup, India finish 10th and became the first nation in hockey history to sack their coach, Cedric D’Souza, midway through the tournament. By the time Gill was done, he had sacked 18 coaches and destroyed the careers of many players.
And even then he had the temerity to say: "Hockey is not instant coffee."
The problem with this whole narrative is that Batra is just starting out (he took over in October 2014) and he has already sacked five coaches (including Paul Van Ass, if he goes). Why, he even dreams of running the Indian Olympic Association at some point...
Administrators -- in India at least -- are known to interfere and grant favours but the good one's stay away from the game as much as possible. The Badminton Association of India is pretty nuts as well at times -- for starters, they sent a 46-year-old man from Punjab police to represent India at an international tournament in Iceland, on the recommendations of the Punjab Badminton Association (PBA). The doubles discipline has also be neglected.
But they have mostly allowed coaches to do their job -- that is also good administration and it shows in our rising profile in the sport. Let people do the jobs they have been hired for and success will follow.
In hockey, however, the administrators believe they are untouchable. They interfere with team selection, sack coaches, scrap schedules -- all because their ego is at play. Van Ass miraculously survived for 126 days -- the hockey equivalent of instant coffee. Terry Walsh was sacked just days after he coached the team to gold at the 2014 Asian Games and an automatic spot in Rio. One can't help but wonder whether any coach worth his name will want to be in charge of India. Put all of this together and it is a recipe for disaster.
When Gill was once asked about the debacle of the hockey team, he famously snapped back: “the team has lost. I have not.”
But if hockey loses, then who wins?

Reliance Industries Net Debt may Cross Rs 1 Lakh Crore

The net debt of Reliance Industries , India's largest oil refiner, is expected to rise to Rs 1 lakh crore before the launch of its digital services business, Reliance Jio Infocomm, in December (net debt is outstanding debt less cash & cash equivalents). The company has spent about Rs 75,000 crore so far to build Jio's infrastructure and digital applications. It has borrowed Rs 30,000 crore and contributed another Rs 30,000 crore as equity so far. Before that, RIL spent Rs 15,000 crore to buy the spectrum, said company officials.
The company is looking to draw in another Rs 25,000-30,000 crore before the roll-out. The overall capital expenditure for the first quarter of this financial year was Rs 32,651 crore. The company was debt-free on a net basis until 2012 because of its higher cash flow from refining. The petrochemical and refinery expansions, and digital services business of Jio have consumed most of the debts that RIL has raised.
Jio's beta testing has begun at the company headquarters in Mumbai, Reliance Corporate Park (RCP). The company is constructing 30,000 towers and a 250,000-km long optical fibre network across India. About 80 per cent of the country will be digitally connected during the time of launch, said officials.
For the petroleum and refining business expansion, RIL has spent about $12 billion and is looking to invest $5 billion. The additional capacities will come completely on stream by 2016/17.
The company has an outstanding (consolidated) debt of Rs 1,70,814 crore at the end of the first quarter, compared to Rs 1,60,860 crore as on March 31, 2015. Cash and cash equivalents as on 30 June 2015 were at Rs 87,391 crore. About 15 per cent of the reserves have been deposited in banks, while the rest are in mutual funds, corporate deposits and government bonds and other marketable securities. The interest cost was at Rs 902 crore in the first quarter as against Rs 505 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. Interest cost was higher mainly on account of the rupee depreciation during the quarter.
RIL's turnover fell by 23 per cent to Rs 83,064 crore because of the 43.5 per cent year-on-year decline in benchmark (Brent) oil price. Lower product prices affected the export value, which fell by 44.9 per cent to Rs 36,717 crore. Cost of raw materials declined by 39.1 per cent to Rs 50,305 crore.
The operating profit increased by 13.2 per cent to Rs 10,177 crore because of the higher contribution from refining and petrochemicals business. Profit after tax was higher by 4.4 per cent at Rs 6,222 crore. Basic earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter ended June 2015 was Rs 21.1 as against Rs 20.3 in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Cortana for Windows 10: Admires Sachin Tendulkar, to be available in India via Windows Insider

Earlier this year, Microsoft had announced that its personal assistant Cortana would only be available on Windows 10 in select countries. Unfortunately, India wasn’t on the list. That might change soon.
However, in an update on the Windows Blog, Marcus Ash, Group Product Manager for Cortana at Microsoft said, “As we’ve already announced, on July 29th, Cortana will debut on Windows 10 in seven countries: the U.S., UK, China, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. Today we’re announcing that over the coming months, Cortana will be available to customers in the Windows Insider Program in Japan and Australia, and in English in Canada and India. Later this year, Cortana will also be available to Windows Insiders in Brazil and Mexico, and in French in Canada.”
This announcement will be exciting to users in India that have been eagerly waiting for Windows 10. Explaining the insight behind Cortana, Ash said, “Our research has shown that aspects of personality such as humor, politeness and approach to national identity resonate differently in different Cortana markets. For example, Cortana understands how highly the UK values self-deprecating humor. Dryness and irony are traits that filter subtly into her personality, and she uses playful sarcasm in her responses if she senses you’re fooling around.”
Cortana: Now, Microsoft has decided to give it a big push in Windows 10 and bring it to desktops. The company plans to bring Cortana to Android and iOS as well.
Cortana: Now, Microsoft has decided to give it a big push in Windows 10 and bring it to desktops. The company plans to bring Cortana to Android and iOS as well.
Ash added, “In Italy, Cortana is proud of national identity. Cortana will use words like “our” in responses to customers, and even sings the national anthem when asked to sing a song. Cortana is also aware of important cultural touchstones in each market. In France, Cortana celebrates the Cannes Film Festival. In Canada, Cortana loves hockey, and in India, Cortana celebrates cricket star and national hero Sachin Tendulkar.”
To highlight its focus on India, Microsoft even included an Indian joke:
Humour and cultural relevance is key to impress Cortana’s Indian user base.
Although, the focus is on “cultural savviness,” Microsoft’s focus with Cortana is more towards understanding geographical context and adapting to language, accent and sensitivities. Cortana in all likelihood will continue to have a uniform experience across markets and geographies.

How to Make Money Writing Articles

How to Make Money Writing Articles
The best money making opportunity I’ve taken advantage of online has been writing articles. I love to write, and I can write well, quickly. This has translated into a lot of money over the past few years.
I’ve tried a few different systems, programs and websites and I’ve been able to narrow it down to my favorites. Whether you’re a decent writer or an exceptional writer, you can get paid what you’re worth.
In fact, it’s important to get paid what you’re worth. I’ll help you get started and become a success whether you want to use writing to supplement your income or have a career change.
I used to search the web to find super easy ways to make money. “Get paid to read emails”, “get paid to stuff envelopes”, etc. These were easy, mundane, and almost effortless income sources.
However, I soon found out that most of these so-called programs were either scams or only allowed me to earn about 50 to 100 dollars a month, if I was lucky.
Thereafter, I started to look for ways to make money that took a little more effort. I still hoped for the simplicity of working from my computer, but I was willing to work a little harder.
Using your Skills
I took an inventory of my skills and realized that writing was a skill I had that could involve the internet. Instead of looking for programs, I looked for legitimate ideas toward a business plan. Looking at money making ideas as a business makes it more secure and hopefully more lucrative.
Are you a Good Writer?
There is a wide range when it comes to writing quality. Bestselling authors tend to be excellent writers (that’s why they are bestselling authors), and ordinary people writing on personal blogs and such can be excellent or just the opposite.
In the online writing market, there is demand for it all, or at least most of it. Some people are willing to pay for sub-par content, but at a much lower price.
What does this mean for you? If you’re not good at writing, you might be able to find work, but you won’t make very much. If you’re a great writer, you will probably be able to find more work and get paid better for it.
If you don’t think your a good writer, it’s likely you don’t like to write either. If that’s the case, you’re better off looking for a different money making idea.
However, if you enjoy writing but you don’t know how good or bad you are at it, jumping in and looking for work will help you quickly gauge your skill level. Also, the more you write, the better you’ll get.

Where to Make Money Writing Online

I’ve come across many different websites and avenues toward getting paid to write articles. Some were difficult to get a hang of, but I have found my favorites.
Please understand that this isn’t a boxed product. If you want to make money writing articles online, you have to treat it like a business and find work. It is basically freelance writing done online, but you can venture into offline territory as well.
Here are a few sites I use personally and recommend. One might appeal to you more than another, which is completely fine. I’ll add the features of each to help you better figure out which will work best for you.

Textbroker

Textbroker is one of my favorite freelance writing opportunities. It is very well-organized and accommodates for all sorts of writing and price ranges. Whether you’re a serious writer looking to make top dollar or you are a fast writer with less-excellent skills, you can find a place to fit in.
text broker
Textbroker is set on star levels 2 through 5. Payment at level 2 is $0.007 per word, level 3 is $0.01 per word, level 4 is $0.014 per word, and level 5 is $0.05 per word. Level 5 is considered premium content and requires far superior writing compared to all three of the other levels.
When you sign up with Textbroker, you have to do a writing test by writing a short sample article. They will then read and rate your article to place you in the right category. Most people start at level 3 or 4 unless they put a lot of effort into it with excellent writing to reach level 5 or put very little effort into it to reach stay at level 2. In fact, it’s probably uncommon for someone to start out in level 5.
You can raise levels over time. Your articles will all be rated. As you write better articles, your level goes higher. The incentive to go up a level is the extra payment. The editors will send you an email every time they rate an article including constructive criticism that will help you make your next articles up to par.
Textbroker typically has a large number of available articles to write. You can go to ‘show orders’ to see open orders. They are in categories and set up by level. When you click on and article you think you want to write, there will be instructions from the client. Write the article according to the client’s instructions and submit it for approval.
They can accept it or deny it depending on how well you wrote it and followed their instructions. If they deny it, you have to edit it for re-submission or cancel your submission. On a few rare occasions, I have had clients who very rudely declined my article. I deleted the article and blacklisted the client so that I would no longer see article requests from them.
Blacklisting can be done by authors and clients. It only makes it so that the person blacklisting won’t see the author or client. It doesn’t affect the visibility to other authors and clients. It basically makes it easier to weed through potential jobs so you don’t have to go back to make sure you’re not working with a client you don’t feel comfortable with.
There are also direct orders. If a client likes your work, they can send an order directly to you, and you can charge more for these despite what level you’re at.
You may fall into some pitfalls now and then such as a client who is hard to deal with or article requests that are nearly impossible. You don’t have to take any article requests you don’t want to write. As you become a better and faster writer, you’ll learn how to deal with it. There is also a forum where you can have discussions with other writers.

Constant Content

Constant Content is for the more serious and experienced writer. It typically pays better than many other programs, but there is a higher quality writing standard. This is a great spot for serious writers who really want to bring in more than change every month with writing. Of course, you have to write consistently in order to earn consistently.constant content
With Constant Content, you can write articles two ways. You can choose your own topic and write an article about it. Submit it to the system and once it’s been approved by an editor, it’s available for customers to buy. You might sell it right away, you might sell it 10 months from now, you might not sell it at all. It all depends on how in demand your article is and how well written it is.
An advantage is that you get to price your own articles. It is recommended to price them between 6 and 9 cents per word, but only if you produce excellent content. Constant Content takes a 35% commission leaving 65% to you. This is pretty decent, especially considering you can price it as high as you want.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you should price your articles extremely high to earn more. The higher the price is, the harder it will be to sell. Over time, you will learn how to price your articles right, choose the best topics, and write well for your customers.
The other way to write is to check the requested content. Customers are allowed to request content that they want written. Writers can then write the article and submit. The customer will choose which one they want to buy. If your article isn’t chosen by the customer, you can then sell it the same way you would other articles.

Elance

Elance is a little bit different. It isn’t designed specifically for writing but for all sorts of jobs such as programming, design, virtual assisting, etc. It is a great site to find writing opportunities as well.
elance logo
At Elance, you can create a profile and look for job postings. Some jobs will ask for a lot and pay very little. Sometimes taking a lower paying job is necessary to gain some experience and rapport, but not if it means being severely underpaid. Find a good balance.
Use Elance to build up a client base. It’s easier to keep clients than to find new ones. Work on improving your work and getting regular client orders. The better you get and the more you work, the better paying the jobs will be.

Finding Other Freelance Writing Opportunities

These are not the only ways you can make money writing. Check out sites like Craigslist or find other sites that list freelance writing jobs. Build a website showcasing your best work and add testimonials from clients whenever you can.
Look for offline opportunities as well if you want to get serious about a freelance writing career. You can write for print magazines, online magazines, newsletters, and other print. You may also want to branch out in fiction if that is something you’re interested in.

Casual Writing or Serious Business?

You can be a freelance writer casually, but you’ll probably only be able to do work with sites like Textbroker and Constant Content. If your just looking for extra income, that is completely fine. However, if you want to be a full time freelance writer, you need to get more serious about finding better paying, stable gigs. Treat it like a business, and along with talent and skill, success will follow.
